Joint Industry Project
"Ocean Current Power Generator"

We are soliciting interest in participating in an ocean current power generation project using the tension leg moored system illustrated above. The
system above supports approximately 60 current generators, each capable of generating approximately 125 kilowatts of electricity, with a resulting 7.5 mega watts of electric power generated by one unit. The system can also support other types of current generators and it can also support wave generators. Each unit can be installed by a standard submersible heavy lift vessel, of the kind used to transport exploration drilling rigs all over the world. Each unit can be also be removed for scheduled maintenance by reversing the installation process.

A current power farm using numerous units like the one above can supply significant continuous power to nearby coastal cities. The units cause no form of pollution like: visual pollution, radiation pollution, air pollution, water pollution, environmental waste pollution or any safety risks. All components are below the water’s surface, and below wave or ship damage. The units are eco-friendly supporting the growth of marine life as offshore structures do all over the world, while allowing fish to swim through them unharmed.

When properly engineered, these systems could be the lowest cost major alternative energy supplier to the countries of the world. It uses simple proven offshore platform design technology - available around the world - and proven existing components.

The proposed project will carry out the required preliminary engineering of a unit, similar to the one above, taking into consideration fabrication, loadout, transportation and installation needs. Concepts for export power cable support, power cable arrival at a central switch gear, transformer and control center will also be developed. The design will develop feasible methods of supporting the leading available and tested current generators.  Full engineering, model testing results and costing documentation will be available to all participants.

We have already received a positive interest in this project by several governmental bodies. If you are also interested, in being involved in the development of this alternative energy project, please contact Offshore Islands Limited for further details.
